Yurt Camp: Kestrel & Malachite
Get ready for the ultimate glamping experience!
Since 2018, Southern Yurts has consistently provided guests with this unforgettable retreat in the Overberg. Stay in the comfort of your own private Yurt: enjoy a local wine while watching the sun set over the Private Nature Reserve, take a walk through our Secret Forest, or soak in a candle-lit hot tub under the stars.
Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to book or Whatsapp Kate on 076 0607424.
The Yurt Camp is split into two neighbouring sites, each with their own private bathroom and kitchen. The two sites are screened from each other, offering guests visual privacy. Each site can be booked independently, or together for larger groups.
Malachite site sleeps 2 - 4 people in two small Camping Yurts, similar in size to a standard dome tent, each equipped with a double bed, side lights, linen and towels. Adjacent to the Yurts are two separate structures for your private use - one is a large bathroom with a hot shower and flush toilet, and the other is a comfortable kitchen and lounge space.
Kestrel sleeps 2 in a Camping Yurt, also equipped with a double mattress, linen, towels and lights. Kestrel has identical facilities to Malachite, with it's own private bathroom and kitchen structures. Kestrel has a private wood-fired hot tub.
Guests can book either Malachite (2 - 4 people) or Kestrel (2 people) as smaller groups, or the two sites can be booked together for a groups of 5 - 6 people. Each kitchen area has a daybed which can be made up with linen to accommodate an additional two guests, and extra camping for up to four campers can be arranged.
Groups of 5 - 6 people who book both sites will have complete privacy of the Yurt Camp. If you are a smaller group and would like to have the privacy of the entire Camp area, please contact us for more information!
Southern Yurts is located on Porcupine Hills Guest Farm, which is home to both a small olive growing operation and a nature conservancy. Guests staying at the Yurt Camp are situated in the conservancy and have full access to the farm during their stay. The farm itself has a wide range of activities and there are even more in the local region!
The Yurt Camp is situated under the farm's distinguishable ridge, with a gentle riverine area to the one side of the camp. Enjoy a walk through the farm's olive groves, only two minutes from the camp, or a longer hike along the beautiful Verraux Trail (1,5 - 2 hours long). For guests that would like to explore more of the conservancy, there are a number of hikes or trail running routes around the farm that give you spectacular views and expose an incredible array of flora unique to the region. Mountain bikers can cycle on nearby farms, with the most notable trails being on Paul Cluver and Oak Valley (30 mins from Southern Yurts).
When you want to be near the water, enjoy a light 5 minute walk to our dam - swim it's length, or enjoy a sundowner under the cool shade of the weeping willow.
For bird lovers, the farm is a small oasis. Whether it's a rare spotting of our resident Moorhen or Coot on the dam, or a Verreaux Eagle soaring over the rocky cliffs above - there will be plenty of feathered reasons to bring your binoculars.
If you're staying a bit longer and would like to discover the area a little more, there are a number of activities for all ages. The nearby highly acclaimed Cape Canopy Tours offers an exhilarating soar by zip line over the Overberg mountains.
For wine tours, we usually recommend Beaumont Wine Estate - they do wine tastings at their stunning farm in Botrivier, located 16km from Southern Yurts/Porcupine Hills Guest Farm. If you'd like to go further afield, Paul Cluver has a wonderful tasting room and restaurant (SALT) which serves tasty lunches and dinners (30 - 40 mins from the farm). There are numerous other tasting rooms and wine farms between Botrivier and Hermanus - we often recommend that guests who feel like exploring the greater Overberg region, drive through Botrivier and towards Hermanus for the day.
There are lovely 'padstals' and wine tasting rooms along the R43 towards Hermanus - all are signposted and generally open Monday - Saturday. Once in Hermanus you can visit the Country Market (Saturday mornings until 1pm) for some delicious freshly grown produce, homemade products and gourmet brunch/lunch. If you'd prefer to be next to the sea, Bientang's Cave offers a spectacular view! Tables are situated right on the rocks looking over the sea, and you can enjoy a local craft beer or glass of wine perfectly paired with a seafood platter. If you're lucky, you may even see whales (in season)!
For more exciting activities in the area, from horse riding to whale watching, please refer to our info-brochure in our accommodation or contact us for more information.
